WHAT ARE THE MAIN ISSUES WITH PELOTON?
Every single product that has ever been brought to market has a failure rate and Peloton is no different. Peloton has helped millions of people lose weight over the years, at the same time, the company has also had it’s fair share of product issues as well. There have been three different Peloton bike recalls over the years that have impacted different Peloton Bike Models that were manufactured at certain points in the company’s existence and sold in both the United States & Canada. The injuries that resulted from these various product failures range from minor bruises all the way up to wrist fractures and lacerations. If you’re in the market to purchase a Peloton, you definitely want to know whether or not the bike you are buying could be at risk for one of the possible Peloton Bike Recall Failures. You also want to know as much as you can about all the other physical attributes of the bike and you can dive into the Peloton Bike: Full Length Review & Hidden Usability Advantages to learn a lot more about those things.
In addition to the recalls, there are a few other minor areas of concern to learn about before getting a Peloton and you can learn about them here in this blog post titled, The Peloton Bike Isn’t Perfect — Here’s What Buyers Should Know
WHICH PELOTON BIKES ARE RECALLED?
The Peloton Original Series Bike+ and the Peloton Original Series Bike have both had recalls in the past. The impacted Peloton Original Series Bike+ models were manufactured from December 2019 through July 2022 and sold in the United States and Canada. As it relates to the Peloton Original Series Bike, this recall impacted bikes sold in the United States & Canada from January 2018 through May 2023. The reasons for the recalls were due to bike seat and pedal failures. The best thing to do if you have a Peloton model that is impacted by one of these recalls is to stop use and take advantage of the part replacement program that Peloton has implemented for these bikes. Once you have received and installed the replacement parts, feel free to continue using the bike. If for some reason you don’t do that, you’re really going to want to take a look at the user manual and use the product in accordance to the guidelines that Peloton Provided and user weight limit is critical for proper use of the Peloton..
DOES PELOTON HAVE A WEIGHT LIMIT?
The weight limit for Peloton is 297 lbs. Whether you took advantage of the bike seat replacement or not, you want to be sure to use the bike at a weight limit that is consistent with the way Peloton recommends. Not following these guidelines not only puts you at risk of injury, but could possibly void the warranty if something were to happen as a result of improper use regarding weight limits.
Riding your Peloton bike near or over the Peloton weight limit is going to put a lot of stress on the bike seat and whether you have replaced the faulty bike seat or not, this is something you shouldn’t do, in order to avoid injury. Considering the fact that weight tends to fluctuate, to be on the safe side, you should get your weight between 260 lbs to 270 lbs before you start an extensive riding program. At that weight range, even if your weight increases, you still should be well beneath the weight limit recommended by Peloton. Keep in mind, this weight limit is suggested to keep users safe while pedaling as well.
CAN I USE MY OWN SHOES WITH PELOTON?
You can use pedals that allow you to use your own shoes or you can use Delta Compatible pedals that allow you to clip in and go for a ride. The pedals that allow you to use regular shoes are simply secured by a strap, the closer you are to that weight limit, the more stress you are putting on that strap, which will lead to a higher likelihood of it popping. The lock Delta Compatible pedals that allow you to clip in would be sensitive to excessive weight that is closer or over the weight limit as well. In either of these situations, putting a high level of strain on the strap or the Delta clip could force it to rupture. When the break happens, the continuous motion of the pedal along with any sharp edges is what leads to injury if your leg is in a position where the pedal can come back around and hit you in the back of your leg on your calf or achilles.
Over the years, there have been 120 reports of Peloton Pedals breaking, 16 of those cases resulted in injury, 5 of which required medical care and that’s the reason for the Peloton Pedal Replacement recall. As you can see, those numbers are miniscule in comparison to the amount of Peloton Bikes that are sold throughout the U.S. & Canada, but you don’t want to be another statistic, so use the bike at the proper weight limits and check the Peloton balancing knobs to make sure the bike is properly leveled as well.
DO I REALLY NEED TO REPLACE MY PEDALS ANNUALLY?
To minimize the possibility of your Peloton Bike Pedals breaking, I would recommend changing out the pedals every year. You can push this time frame a little longer depending on how often you use the bike. Someone who uses their Peloton more as a clothing rack as opposed to actually using it for its intended purpose, wouldn’t have to change out their pedals on the 365th day of the year, because the bike primarily just sat in the corner and collected dust. On the other hand, if you are actually a Peloton Warrior that rides their bike at least 3 times a week, then you are going to have to get new pedals for the bike every 365 days, if not sooner. Aside from avoiding actual physical harm, changing out the pedals every year is helpful for couples that keep the bike in their rooms.
DOES A PELOTON BIKE MAKE NOISE?
The reason the pedal switch is helpful for couples is because as the pedals and overall bike gets older, the bike pedals start to get a bit noisy and consistently make a clicking sound. This noise can be annoying for the spouse that sleeps in, while the early bird spouse that’s riding away isn’t really considering the fact that the clicking sound is interrupting the sleep of their significant other. The sounds coming from the instructors delivering instructions are a none issue, because all you have to do is get your bluetooth headphones and listen to the classes on those.
Overall, does the Peloton bike make noise? Yes, the Peloton makes noise after a while once the pedals get old and yes, the volume on the screen can be an issue if it goes unchecked, but both of those things are entirely in your control.
PELOTON IS FULLY TRANSPARENT ABOUT THEIR ISSUES AND IS WILLING TO FIX THEM
Do Peloton Bike seats break, sure! Do Peloton Pedals break as well, sure! Does the Peloton Bike make noise, the Pedals do start having a clicking sound as time progresses. However, avoiding these things are all within your control, ride within the weight limits and be sure to change out the pedals every year.
